Carcassonne is where Barthelemy initially moved to after the 'family''s return from the Pallars. He found employment in a church of St. Michael's that I could not locate, and likely does not exist anymore. Then, as now, Carcassonne was a heavily fortified city with a town outside and below its city walls. It is likely that Barthelemy's church was in a part of that old city that did not survive the ravages of the centuries.

A road to Carcassone from Limoux strikes me as providing scenery not unlike that seen by our main fairytale characters as they approached Carcassonne from the south or southwest:

The ramparts and battlements of Carcassonne were rebuilt in the 19th century in a slightly more fanciful style than was the case in the time of our interest. For sure, Beatrice made a few conjugal vists to her husband in the shadows of the predecessors of these walls.

Between these walls lies an active village with hotels, restaurants, artists, art dealers, and more:

There is also the castle, a fortified place within a fortified place!

Overlooking the Medieval village below rise these very solid walls and defensive positions:

It is very likely Barthelemy served parishioners in a more modest church situated under the wall, in the old Medieval city, not unlike this larger modern counterpart:

The cemetery was also outside the city walls, and can be seen through ports in the massive walls:
