Now that I spend about 3/4th of my life working 30 miles away from Carlsbad Caverns National Park, and only 1/4th of my life at 'home' in Las Vegas, NV, I have made quite a few trips into the caverns.
cool air (!!),
and exercise (!).
What more COULD there be?
I already have a page and a movie (see links below) about the Carlsbad Caverns, so why more? Easy, to try out a 'new' camera.
The previous photos, good as they are, were taken with a small Kodak Easy-Share digital camera. My "new" camera is a Canon Rebel XSi (it is already getting old, too).
So, I had to go and try the Canon, going back and forth between "no-flash automatic" or "landscape" with ISO manually set at 400, or 800 for really dark shots. I used a tripod, which was not easy, because there were few level places and some photos took about 9 seconds for the camera to collect enough light. This means what you see with your eye is not what you see in these photos, in terms of either light or in some cases color (green shows up in some long exposure photos and that it not what my eyes saw). I have used Photoshop Elements to lightly adjust the contrast and color, and to cut the size of the photos down to be useful on the web.
I have also started walking in and out, down and up, rather than taking the elevators, and find the vistas on that steep walk just breathtaking! (Literally- on the uphill walk, figuratively- on the downhill walk. Yet true in both cases.)
Are you tired of my chatter already?!
OK, just one more point and one more story.
Some formations have been given names based on part of their appearance being analogous to something in our experience. Only in a few places do I use those names. Names of that sort have no explanatory power.
Quote me on this:
"Just because you can name it,
doesn't mean you understand it."
One more thing (a story).
I blame Gustave Doré and his illustrations in Dante's Inferno for some of my feelings entering the dark of the cave and for the Devil imagery used by the namers of formations in the caverns.
Dante walked into the netherworld, hell, just as you walk into this cavern, which is not hell. Doré's illustrations always come to mind as I enter this cave via the walk-in route! Maybe that says more about me than either you or I want to know.
What am I talking about? For those of you who are not Dante fans? The Doré illustrations below are taken from the link given here.
So, now are you ready to descend with me into the bowels of the Earth, where, if it were not for some artificial light, you would be in darkness so total that only your fears will take an illuminated form, to be 'seen' with the 'mind's eye.'
Why, if those lights actually went out, you may even 'see' the root of all your fears, the Devil himself, after whom several formations in these caverns are named:
There are several places where the floor in Carlsbad Caverns is as smooth and wet as here depicted by Doré.
But look, Dante and Virgil are not afraid, not at all! Two books later, Dante enters the very Divine Presence, the Source of all Light and Love, and for once the greatest poet on Earth is speechless!
For some persons, but by no means all, their personal journey into Light requires a sojourn through darkness.
May your journey through darkness be as light and delightful as a walk through Carlsbad Caverns!
So here is the plan for our virtual cave visit:
A. The 'natural' entrance and first dark
B. The Devil's Spring and next room
C. Descent, descent, and more descent
D. The Green Lake Room
E. After the Green Lake Room
F. Coming into the main cavern: the Big Room
G. Some of my favorite Big Room formations
